11 Easy Ways to Save on Your Water Bill

Water is an essential part of life, and it’s important to keep your water bill under control. With the current increase in the cost of water as a result of climate change and scarcity of resources, it's important to know how to save on water bills. The good news is you can make a few small changes to reduce your water bill without a major overhaul of your plumbing system.

In today’s economy, saving money is of the utmost importance, and this includes finding ways to save on your water bill. With so many people looking for ways to cut corners and save money on their monthly expenses, it is important to consider ways to conserve water and lower the overall charge on your water bill. There are a variety of simple and effective ways to save on your water bill that do not require major re-modification to your home or dramatic lifestyle changes. With just a few simple steps, you can significantly reduce the amount of money you spend on water for your household.

Here are eleven ways to save on your water bill.

1.  Install Low-Flow Showerheads

Low-flow showerheads save water without sacrificing performance by using less water than traditional showerheads. Not only do lower-flow showerheads help conserve the planet’s water resources, but they also save you money on your water bill. Look for a showerhead that has an aerator that mixes air with water, creating a better spray and reducing the amount of water you use.

2.  Install Water-Saving Fixtures

To save on water bills, start with the fixtures. Look for fixtures with the WaterSense label from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These products have undergone independent testing and are certified to save water. So replacing your regular showerheads and faucets with WaterSense-labeled versions can save 10–42 percent of indoor water use, according to the EPA.

3.  Change Outdated Fixtures

Older plumbing fixtures often use a lot of water, so check out your options for updating these fixtures. Newer options are more efficient and can save you money in the long run. Consider replacing outdated toilets, faucets, and showerheads with newer, water-efficient models.

4.  Fix Leaky Faucets

One water-saving tip that everyone should remember is to check your faucets periodically for leaks. Leaks are one of the most common water wasters, and they can really add up when it comes to your water bill. Check all your faucets periodically and fix any leaks right away. If your faucets need replacing, look for low-flow options that are designed to reduce water use.

5.  Repair Toilet Problems

Toilet leaks are a common issue and can waste a lot of water. So check your toilets and the connections to the toilet fill valve. If you find a leak, repair it immediately. Consider installing a dual-flush toilet, which has two buttons - one for low-level flushes and one for full-level flushes - so you can save water when a full flush isn’t necessary. If you have a running toilet, it can also be costing you a lot of money on your water bill. Make sure to check for a running toilet regularly and replace it if necessary to save you money on your water bill.

6.  Stick to Shorter Showers

A five-minute shower can use up to 20 gallons of water, and a five-minute bath can use up to 65 gallons. So cutting down the time you spend in the shower can make a huge difference in your water bill. Taking hot showers can also be very costly in terms of your water bill. It is important to think about ways to reduce the amount of time you spend in the shower and turn down the heat of the water. This is an easy way to save money and reduce your water consumption. Install a timer in the shower to stay on track and try to keep your showers to four minutes or less.

7.  Collect Rainwater

Harvesting rainwater can be surprisingly easy and cost-effective. If you live in an area that gets a lot of rain, you can collect the runoff and use it to water lawns and plants, wash your car, or even flush your toilet. Rain barrels are a great way to do this, as they offer an easy way to collect and store rainwater. Most rain barrels come with a hose connection and overflow feature, so you can easily use the stored water. This not only reduces your reliance on tap water and reduces your water bill, but it also helps to conserve this precious resource.

8.  Adjust Sprinklers

If you have a sprinkler system, check your settings periodically. If the system is set to water too often or too much, you’ll waste an enormous amount of water and the bill could skyrocket. So adjust the timer and water schedule according to the needs of your landscape and the climate in your area. If you manually water your lawn, consider investing in a watering wand or nozzle to get better coverage with less water.

9.  Properly Maintain Your Appliances

Paying close attention to how your appliances are being used and regularly maintaining them can help to reduce your water bill. Pay special attention to dishwashers and washing machines, as these can be major consumers of water. If you notice that your water bill is higher than usual, there may be a problem with the appliances in your home. Regularly maintain your appliances and make sure they are working properly - this will help you to reduce your water consumption, and it's a great way to be as environmentally conscious as possible.

10.  Install a Water Filtration System

Installing a water filter can reduce the need for expensive bottled water and can provide a better taste and quality of water for drinking and cooking. Additionally, filters typically require less water to use than other methods, such as boiling. Another way a filtration system helps save water is by helping you conserve it. By doing this, you will be able to avoid wasting this valuable resource and keep it for future use.

11.  Wash Your Dishes Efficiently

Do you still use an old washing machine to wash dishes? Consider upgrading to a modern, efficient dishwasher, which can reduce water usage by 40-50% compared to manual washing. Additionally, many newer dishwashers include a water-saving feature that conserves even more water.

Cutting your water usage is good for the environment and it can save you money. Monitor your water use and make informed decisions about what steps you can take. You'd be surprised how easy it can be to lower your footprint when you get down to it, and everything helps out at that point.
